Eelco Hilgersom

BIOGRAPHY

Eelco Hilgersom (b. 1979, Amsterdam, Netherlands) is a Dutch contemporary sculptor and installation artist whose work explores the hidden structures and forms of the natural world. Drawing inspiration from fungi, animal skins and other organic organisms, he translates these natural systems into tactile, biomorphic sculptures characterised by vivid colour and a distinctive sense of movement.

Hilgersom’s work is represented by galleries across Europe, the Americas, Asia and Australia and is held in private and corporate collections internationally. He describes his practice as “an abstract reflection of the wondrous beauty of nature.”

TECHNIQUE

Hilgersom works primarily with sculptural forms, resin, layered pigments and highly reflective finishes, combining organic structures with saturated colour and polished surfaces.

His Habitat series comprises large-format wall sculptures and freestanding sculptural objects inspired by organic forms. High-gloss, mirror-like surfaces reflect and multiply their surroundings, creating a visual connection between artwork, viewer and space. Each work is individually named—such as Braver, Fierce, Indulge or Soothing—to evoke a particular emotional quality. Works can be wall- or plinth-mounted and commissioned in custom dimensions.

The Bloodline series takes inspiration from mycelium and the bleeding tooth fungus (Hydnellum peckii). Cast in resin using layered pigments, the sculptures feature clustered, pearl-like formations that appear to grow organically from their base. The technique creates forms that sit between the familiar and the alien, combining references to natural growth with an otherworldly sculptural presence.
