Liu DAO (a Pinyin phrase meaning "island number 6") is a Shanghai-based art collective of painters, sculptors, software and digital imaging artists, art directors, dancers, writers, curators, photographers, filmmakers, writers and engineers. With a mutual passion for converting the latest technological advancements into authentic art, the groups creates and thrives under a unified name, fully respecting each artist's contribution and vision towards the final works produced. The members of the team vary and so far, since its synthesis in 2006, the group has consisted of anything between 6 – 26 people.
The collective produces innovative artworks that constantly contemplate the future of Asia, engaging sights and icons from old and new China while elevating the skills of new talents by working from a communal forum.
Liu Dao has appeared in prestigious art fairs worldwide, include Art Paris, Hong Kong Art Fair, Scope New York, Art Basel, Art Dubai and others. Special invitations for solo or group shows have included Louis Vuitton Cultural Space in Taipei and Macao; and the Red Gate Gallery in Beijing. The collective has also exhibited with the Rockbund Art Museum and the Smithsonian Anacostia Museum. They have also held solo exhibitions in Beijing, Bangkok, New York, Auckland, Milan, Taipei and Dubai, among others. In 2010 they were brought into the Louis Vuitton gallery of Macau.
Liu Dao’s art form is visual, interactive, conceptual, humorous and somber; Within the framework of a collaborative culture, the concepts and direction takes on modern technology. The group places emphasis on interaction in order to engage artists, curators and technicians in the process of creating and experiencing art on a collective value.
