Ando HIRO

BIOGRAPHY

Ando Hiro (1973) is a contemporary multidisciplinary artist, who has used oil on canvas, digital supports, worked in video art and of course sculpture. His work conflates Japanese archetypes like Hello Kitty, the Panda, the Samurai, the Sumo wrestler, creating a dialogue between traditional past and present culture.

His sculptures are inspired by his own interpretation of Japanese popular culture and merge the traditional with contemporary. In this way, the cat, which in Japan is a lucky charm in the form of the Maneki-Neko comes in a variety of traditional Japanese figures such as the Samurai or the Sumo and he playfully translates this theme in a very modern way.

TECHNIQUE

The shiny, smooth materials, the bright colors, the sharp but rounded shapes of his sculptures take us to the world of Mangas in which the artist’s generation grew up in. His friendly, anthropomorphized animal figurines are interpreted as a contemporary take on traditional Maneki-Neko (lucky cat).
