BIOGRAPHY

South Korean artist Sang-Sik Hong (1974) has really impressed the South Korean art world. He has even transformed our impression of everyday items such as plastic straws into symbols of strength and complexity - a contrast to today’s technology-dominated society.

He connects images of power and desire by using numbers to add volume to his images. The frivolity on his works symbolizes semantic relationships and the display of human desires implies the pathos of authenticity.

TECHNIQUE

The symbols he uses represent sex and power; he creates detailed portraits of facial parts – eyes, lips. His technique, artistically mounting plastic straws onto a vertical platform, forces viewers to experience it from an unusual point and initiates a reason to explore this elusive “image within an image”.
