Carlos CRUZ-DIEZ

BIOGRAPHY

Born in 1923 in Caracas, Venezuela, Carlos Cruz-Diez has lived and worked in Paris since 1960. He is a major actor of the optic and kinetic art movements. His works are in the permanent collections of cultural and international institutions including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Tate Modern London, the Centre Pompidou and the Musée d’Art Moderne in Paris and the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston…

TECHNIQUE

In 1955, Cruz-Diez discovered kinetic art and four years later he created his first Couleur Additive and Physiochromie artworks. His work is based on a multidisciplinary research of chromatic phenomena, particularly under the effect of the movement of the spectator and the light source, thus creating a series of chromatic and optical variations.  His research can be divided into eight chapters: Couleur Additive, Physiochromie, Induction Chromatique, Chromointerférence, Transchromie, Chromosaturation, Chromoscope and Couleur dans l’Espace. Carlos Cruz-Diez’ visual discourse relies on the chromatic phenomena, intended as an autonomous reality that evolves in space and time without the help of the shape or support in a continuous present.
