“I paint pixels on canvas”

So young yet so talented, Maikeul already rocked the auction world. At Millon, his work went within minutes for an impressive bid of 19 000€ for his NFT "The Rebbe".

Born in the mid-'90s, Maikeul is part of this new generation of artists on a mission to reshape the art world, as we know it, with NFT technology. A Non Fungible Token (NFT) is a certificate of ownership for a unique digital asset. In plain English: it is a one-of-a-kind piece of code, stored and protected on a blockchain (a shared public exchange).

NFT dates back to 2015 on the Ethereum blockchain, but only recently exploded in the art scene. This growing interest in crypto art has indeed been accelerated by the closure of art galleries during the lockdown. On March 11th, 2021, the influential auction house Christie's made history, presenting a purely digital work for the first time, "Everydays: the first 5000 days" by Beeple. Christie's not only achieved the record for an NFT sale with 69 million USD, they also were the very first to accept a cryptocurrency settlement.

As often in the art market, furthermore within the auction segment, the value of a piece mainly reflects the price one is willing to pay to own the work.  What's more here is that it also dabbles in cryptocurrency, one other very volatile market ...  But as the saying goes, the riskiest investments are the most profitable!

Though we will keep an eye out on this new trend and monitor NFT performances, we are delighted to be back in galleries and present works in person. Our Paris and Miami spaces are waiting for your next visit, during which we would love to discuss the latest trends and our more traditional celebrated artists.
